Also known as: Madagascar Lovebird, The Lovebird of Madagascar
The Gray-headed Lovebird, also known as the Madagascar Lovebird, is a small parrot native to Madagascar. Males and females have distinct appearances; males feature a gray head and upper chest, while the rest of their body is green. Females, on the other hand, are entirely green with no gray on their heads. Both sexes have a short, stubby tail and a white ring around their eyes.
These lovebirds are highly social and often seen in pairs or small flocks. They are known for their cheerful, high-pitched calls that echo through their habitats. Their diet mainly consists of seeds, fruits, and berries, which they forage in the wild.
The Gray-headed Lovebird prefers dry deciduous forests, savannas, and shrublands, often near water sources. They nest in tree cavities, where they lay several eggs and both parents participate in feeding the chicks.
The species is not currently considered endangered, but like many wildlife species, they face threats from habitat loss and the pet trade. Ensuring their habitats are protected is vital for their continued survival.
