Also known as: White-bellied Spinifex Pigeon, Plumed Pigeon, Rufous-bellied Spinifex Pigeon
The Spinifex Pigeon is a striking bird native to the arid regions of Australia. It is small and stocky, with rich chestnut-brown plumage patterned with black bars on its wings and back. A bold black stripe runs across its face, contrasting with white markings. Its most notable feature is the tall, spiky crest on its head, which resembles the spinifex grasses it inhabits.
These pigeons are highly adapted to desert life, often found in rocky terrains, spinifex grasslands, and dry scrublands. They rarely stray far from water sources, though they can survive on minimal moisture thanks to their efficient water conservation.
Spinifex Pigeons forage on the ground in small groups, feeding on seeds, leaves, and the occasional insect. Their coloration helps them blend into their surroundings, providing excellent camouflage against predators.
They are monogamous birds, nesting in shallow scrapes on the ground, usually sheltered by rocks or vegetation. Their call is a soft cooing sound, often heard during the breeding season. The Spinifex Pigeon’s resilience makes it a fascinating inhabitant of Australia’s harsh outback.
