Emu

About the Emu
Also known as: Common Emu, Spotted Emu, Australian Emu
The Emu or Common Emu is an extremely large bird native to Australia. In fact, it is the world's second largest bird, after the Ostrich. They can reach over six feet in height!

Emus are flightless. They have wings, which they flap while running. They are fast on their feet, able to reach a speed of about 30 miles per hour. Emus defend themselves using their feet. Their strong legs can pack a powerful punch and their toes are equipped with sharp claws.

Emus have a varied diet, consuming both plant and animal matter. They feed on fruit, grains, and seeds. They prey on crickets, moth larvae, spiders, and other small animals. They also swallow small stones to assist in the breakdown of plant material in their gizzard.
